Description:
To familiarize students with the principles of scientific research and evidence-based practice essential for the provision of quality healthcare and patient safety. The aim is to provide the opportunity to critically apply some of the evidence-based models of nursing practice and to provide guidelines for the collection, analysis and synthesis of evidence.
Learning outcomes:
  1. to assess the relevance of scientific research and practice based on evidence for the provision of quality health care and patient safety
  2. to identify possible ethical ambiguities associated with scientific research and evidence-based practice
  3. to critically evaluate some of the models of evidence-based nursing practice - the Stetler Model (Stetler, 2000), the Iowa Model (Titler et al., 2001), the Johns Hopkins Model (Newhouse et al., 2007), the ACE Star Model (Stevens, 2004), the Model of Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses (Reavy, Tavernier, 2008)
  4. use scientific databases to identify the best/most compelling evidence
  5. to apply guidelines for the collection, analysis and synthesis of evidence and the implementation of the promoted practice in the field of health care
  6. apply the best/most compelling evidence in the nursing process
